    30.09.2015  19:59

Yesterday an important step was taken towards normalization of the situation in Burkina Faso when President Kafando was reinstated. The military coup was carried out in a situation when the interim government was preparing the organization of free and fair presidential- and parliamentary elections on October 11. The elections would have established Burkina Faso as a democratic pioneer in Africa after the interim government took office following the popular but relatively peaceful uprising in November 2014 against Blaise Compaoré who had been in power for 27 years.   Burkina Faso is an important partner to Denmark in West Africa. Denmark has a long-term development cooperation with Burkina Faso going back to 1973.   The Minister of Foreign Affairs Kristian Jensen states:   “I am satisfied with the reestablishment of constitutional order and the reinstatement of President Kafando in Burkina Faso. The development is a crucial step towards normalization of the situation in the country. The Burkinabe actors have played an important role in the restoration of democracy together with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Denmark will continue to follow the situation closely, and we are together with the EU and the rest of the international community ready to support Burkina Faso. I urge all parties to take the necessary responsibility and seek political solutions through dialogue in connection with the challenges that Burkina Faso continues to be facing. Also, the upcoming democratic elections should be carried out as soon as possible.”
